Gun Salute on Spike Island to welcome the New Year

A Gun Salute is taking place on Spike Island on New Years Day, Wednesday 1st January, 2014, to mark the start of 2014. This will be the third year that the New Year is being welcomed by a gun salute on Spike Island, following on from similar events in 2012 and 2013.

The gun salute will be fired from the southern side of Spike Island at 2.00 pm on New Years Day.

The salute is an appropriate event for Cork Harbour and for the furtherance of Spike Island as a major iconic tourist destination in Cork.

To mark the event, Cork County Council is offering individuals and families a fantastic opportunity to visit Spike Island on Wednesday 1st January at significantly reduced rates to experience the rich history which this Island has to offer.
